I firmly believe that you should make it as easy as possible for people to find you. There are many ways to do this and one of the most important is to have multiple domain names leading to your website. A good starting point is to have one for your business name, one for your own name, and one for your nickname or business slogan.

Why? I believe in making it as easy as possible for people to find you. They may not remember your business name but if they know your name or nickname it's easy for them to remember "yourname.com" or "yournickname.com" to get to your website.

You may be surprised to learn that you can have more than one domain name leading to your website!  We have seven, various incarnations of the business name, our names, our slogan.

There are other good reasons for registering and using more than one domain name:

  • Keep your competition from registering a similar domain name drawing customers to them instead of you

  • Promote the different products and services you offer

  • Drive more traffic to your website

  • Create distinct advertising strategies reaching different target markets

  • Capture common misspellings of your domain name, instead of sending visitors to an error page

  • Protect your brand and online identity

The cost per domain name is low and at the end of a year you can always not renew them. It's about $13/year for a domain name and if you want your info kept private, it's about $20/year. For example, I bought harrysagara.com not because he wants to have his own website, but because there is another man by the same name in Uganda whose views on women are horrifying, so it's great that the fool can't get at that domain name and use it. It would be very expensive to own every incarnation of my name, and Harry's name (.org, .info etc.), so I just do the main ones (.com and .net).

FYI, since we have seven domain names leading to our website we don't dilute our SEO efforts by connecting them all directly. We use "301 Redirects" instead. Search engines recognize the 301 redirect as a valid method of permanently rerouting traffic from one domain name to another and we are not penalized for "duplicate content."

Let us know if you have questions or need help with your domain names. We often work in collaboration with other creative minds and all our work is 100% customized. Everyone is different, we'll design a way to get done that works for you.

All my best to you and yours,

-Robin
